There is a whole industry built on a simple insight about you. Your attention can be captured, measured, and sold, and you will hand it over for free if the design is good enough. Most of us have been paying that price for years without ever seeing the bill.
The Moment I Caught Myself
One evening in Port Harcourt I reached for my phone to check one thing. I do not remember what the thing was. I remember looking up twenty minutes later, unable to account for where the time had gone, having read nothing I would remember and spoken to no one who was actually in the room with me.
What unsettled me was not the lost twenty minutes. It was that I had not decided to spend them. My hand had moved before my mind was consulted. Somewhere along the way a habit had been installed in me, and it was running without my permission.
I build technology for a living. I understand how these systems work. And still I had been caught. That is when I stopped treating my attention as something I obviously controlled and started treating it as something under active, well funded attack.
What the Attention Economy Actually Is
Here is the whole thing in one sentence. When a product is free, your attention is what is being sold.
The platforms that fill our days do not make money when we are well. They make money when we are engaged. Those are not the same thing, and often they are opposites. The metric that pays is time on the app. Everything about the design serves that metric, which means everything about the design is tuned to keep you scrolling, not to help you live.
This is not a conspiracy. It is a business model, stated plainly in the quarterly reports. The engineers are not villains. They are doing their job, and their job is to hold your attention as long as possible so it can be rented to someone else. Your distraction is not a side effect of the product. Your distraction is the product.
The Capacities It Quietly Erodes
The cost is not mainly the time, though the time is real. The deeper cost is what the constant interruption does to specific human capacities that took us a lifetime to build.
### Deep Thought
Real thinking requires sustained, unbroken attention. It is a long walk, not a series of hops. A mind trained by the feed to jump every few seconds slowly loses the ability to stay with a hard idea long enough to actually understand it. We do not become less intelligent. We become less able to concentrate our intelligence, which amounts to nearly the same thing.
### Patience
The feed grants a small reward instantly and endlessly. Life does not work this way. Marriages, skills, faith, children, anything worth having, all pay out slowly. A person conditioned to expect instant reward starts to experience the slow and valuable things as broken, and abandons them just before they would have flowered.
### Presence
The person in front of you deserves your face, not the top of your head while you glance at a screen. Presence is the ground of every real relationship, and it is exactly what the buzzing device is designed to fracture. A family can live in the same room for years and slowly become strangers, each of them present in body and absent in attention.
### Memory
We remember what we attend to. When we experience our own lives through a divided, half present attention, we form thinner memories of them. There is a strange poverty in this. We can document everything and remember almost nothing, because we were never fully there to begin with.
Reclaiming Attention in an Age Built to Steal It
I am not against these tools. I use them. The goal is not to flee the modern world but to stop being quietly farmed by it.
The most important shift is this. Stop relying on willpower alone. You are one tired human being facing a system engineered by teams to defeat exactly the willpower you are counting on. That is not a fair fight, and you will not win it by trying harder.
Change the environment instead. Take the endless apps off the home screen so opening them requires a decision. Charge the phone outside the bedroom so the first and last hour of your day belong to you. Keep one meal and one conversation each day completely screen free, and protect it like it matters, because it does. These are small changes to what is easy, and what is easy is what wins over years.
The Spiritual Cost
I will say the deepest part last. Attention is not only an economic resource. In my tradition it is close to the whole of the spiritual life.
To pray is to attend. To love is to attend. To worship is to give your full attention to what is worthy of it. When our attention is fractured and sold all day long, something in us that is meant to be able to focus on the eternal grows weak from disuse. A soul that cannot pay attention cannot easily pay attention to God, or to the person beside it, or to the quiet voice of its own conscience.
Your attention is the most valuable thing you own. It is where your one and only life actually happens. Do not give it away for free to people who have decided, in advance, that your distraction is worth more to them than your life is worth to you.
